If you go back to the original, though, Roud’s proposal actually ends on an ambivalent note: “Before this theory [of 19th century origins] can be finally accepted, however, an examination of the history of European forms of this custom would be advisable.”

GtkSvg will be available in GTK 4.22, but we will not use it for every SVG icon yet — we still have a much simpler symbolic icon parser which is used for icons that are looked up by icon name from an icontheme.
